Portfolio 4: A November Update

Intensive Month By Choice

Before I entered my next portfolio class I had heard from students that we were only able to create a realistic asset. While I'm deeply trying to have a sci fi portfolio I had to compromise. Our instructor was only with us for a week as he had maternity leave so we had the Portfolio 6 instructor grading/critiquing us in class in front of everyone. While that seems unfair I did my best to look at it positively. If I get a decent or above average grade from him then that means I'm on a great track for how I'll actually do in Portfolio 6.

So I remained optimistic.

While the high poly seems like a great deal of duplication each hole had to be cut out to fit when it came to the following weeks low poly bake. We only needed to achieve a normal map for the second week. I baked this down under 60,000 polygons and retained a great deal of information.

Tektronix 465 Oscilloscope - Reference

I really got to work outside my comfort zone with this piece with the amount of high quality text that needed to be displayed. This project was intended to only have to 4k texture sets holding it together but many instructors and artists that gave me critiques told me to add a realistic glass screen as a separate texture/object to really sell the object. I also remember a few of my critiques from ACG and TPS where minor normal surface detail also helps sell plastic objects throughout. So if there are any artists reading I recommend using the grainy filter in substance painter and letting the few parameters it has benefit you.

Week 3 & 4 - Three Quarters

Week 3 & 4 - Front

Week 3 & 4 - Back

This was really an incredible month to exercise the inspiration I've had from many artists I've seen on artstation. Particularly James McLean with his Retro Computer asset he created some months ago. From that I also delved into Marmoset Toolbag for the first time with their 30 day trial. Luckily my lab instructor for the course uses it along with Octane renderer so he able to get me up to speed pretty quickly. After a few tests I came out with this. A really gratifying glass test.
